This weekend is cause for celebration! And not just because it’s 4/20 (aka National Weed Day), a day in which cannabis consumers all over the world celebrate by smoking their favorite marijuana. But because this marks the first year in Canada pot is legal on 4/20. It also happens to mark the 25th anniversary of Vancouver’s world-famous 420 protest, which of course, means more celebrating.

4/20 is set to be bigger and better this year thanks to the legalization of marijuana countrywide. So whether this is your 25th 4/20 celebration, or your very first, it’s time to lock down what you’re going to do to take part in this exciting, international, counterculture holiday.

But first, a look at what 4/20 even is and why it’s become such an international holiday.

The History Behind 4/20

April 20th of every year is considered an unofficial holiday where people all over the world celebrate pot use and call for the legalization of cannabis. But do you know how 4/20 came to be or why it exists?

And no, it’s not just a unified day to smoke marijuana. There’s a lot more to it than that – and this year Canadians are sure to have a lot to say about how far their nation has come in regards to pot use.

In the 1970s in California, it was rumored that some high school kids with nothing better to do caught wind of a marijuana patch growing not too far from their school, and they were determined to find it. Dubbed “The Waldos,” this group of 5 teen boys set out on this scavenger hunt for their own weed plant, meeting at exactly 4:20 p.m. after school every day to continue their search efforts. And while the boys never found the mysterious plants they were looking for, they sure did smoke a lot of pot at 4:20 while discussing their plans to keep looking.

Eventually, as this story spread across the world, the term “420” became known as a call sign to smoke weed no matter where you were or what they laws said, and eventually led to the creation of April 20th being a day of protest that marijuana was illegal to smoke.

But What About Canada?

In 1995, Vancouver-based pot activist Jodie Emery and her husband, Marc, helped establish April 20th as a full-day celebration of cannabis. While celebrating, 420 consumers also took a stand against marijuana prohibition, in hopes that someday weed would be legalized.

Emery herself claims, “It was a group of people coming together and peacefully, using civil disobedience, to openly break a bad law to demonstrate that law was ridiculous and should change.”

Comparing it to those going to a concert or a hockey game and sharing a similar interest, Emery explained that 4/20 was a day of protest and a way to get like-minded people together.

While Vancouver has long been the hub for 4/20 celebrations and protests in Canada for the past 20 years, annual rallies in Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa have always occurred.

And now that pot is legal across all of Canada, many wonder what will happen to the spirit of 4/20. After all, one of the main reasons people came together was to protest prohibition.

Many experts, such as Jenna Valleriani, a strategic adviser for Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy, suggest that 4/20 will still be a yearly event, though the meaning is likely to change. In fact, she claims that 4/20 will now represent more of a celebration of weed than an actual protest, though the memory of why 4/20 started in the first place will remain in the hearts of 420 consumers.

Valleriani also goes on to remind us that legalization isn’t perfect. There are still things to protest, such as unjust cannabis laws, and people that are living through the legalization of weed are sure to keep that spirit alive.

4/20 in Canada – What Am I Going to Do?

So, you know you want to take part in this yearly celebration of marijuana, especially since weed is now legal in Canada and there is a lot to be happy about. But you find yourself wondering, “What am I going to do on 4/20?”

Well, we happen to have a list of all the major cities in Canada that openly celebrate 4/20, complete with festivals, food, live music, weed-themed parties, and so much marijuana, so you can put yourself in the middle of what is sure to be a great time.
